From 2018 to 2021, I taught Ballet for Seniors classes at Queensland Ballet. Grounded in ballet technique, my classes included barre work, centre practice and choreographic sequences pitched for older adults who are new to dance (or coming back to it.

I worked through exercises slowly, explained technique, listened to my participants as experts of their own bodies and cracked jokes.

Together we smashed ballet and ageing stereotypes.

I have only been to one class but there was a strong feeling of “togetherness” that made being in the group fun. Anja created a feeling of camaraderie and inclusion. She was generous and giving.

It’s important for all participants to be included in the beginners class. The class is always full and contains participants at different levels. Everyone enjoys the class and share friendship and a good sense of humour and camaraderie. Everyone working to their own level and expectations. It’s great spending time on technique and Anja explains all positions at a level as beginners we can relate to and understand.
